من نحن
The Southern Independent Group is an informal, independent group formed by and consists of human rights defenders from South Yemen, of whom are based primarily in South Yemen, the Middle East and Europe.
The Group is not affiliated to any of the warring parties in Yemen and it simply seeks to highlight and promote awareness of the Human Rights issues in South Yemen, primarily the right of the South Yemen people for self-determination.
The Group works with governmental and non-governmental agencies and organizations and similar aim organizations to achieve its objectives; in particular, the Group utilizes the periodic United Nations Human Rights Council Sessions in Geneva as a platform to do so.
What We Do
UN Human Rights Council Engagement
We actively participate in periodic sessions in Geneva, monitoring human rights violations on the ground and reporting them through the media to international human rights organizations.
Global Seminars & Meetings
We hold high-level meetings and seminars with international NGOs and global decision-makers to clarify the human rights situation in South Yemen and convey our people's aspirations for a secure future.
Advocating for Self-Determination
We work to amplify the voice of South Yemenis internationally, defending their legitimate rights to self-determination and the restoration of a modern, federal state under international law (Article 55 of the UN Charter).
Community Projects & Achievements
Beyond political advocacy, SIG actively implements on-the-ground humanitarian projects for vulnerable populations in Aden and across the south:
Back to School Project
Helping children from low-income families whose education has been hindered by conflict and poverty. Our Education Sponsorship Program provides uniforms, books, meals, and transportation so students can complete their secondary education.
Orphanage Care
Providing essential care, protection, and support to children who have lost their parents due to the war in South Yemen, giving them the chance at a normal life and a secure future.
Supporting the Elderly
Providing direct care, attention, and necessary resources to support the old people's home in Aden, ensuring dignity and comfort for the elderly.
Our Story & Milestones
2017 – Present
Began periodically covering and participating in the United Nations Human Rights Council sessions in Geneva, actively monitoring violations in Yemen.
2018
Launched a major international petition urging the UN Security Council to ensure genuine representation for South Yemen in peace talks.
2022
Formally registered in the United Kingdom as a private non-profit company to expand operational and advocacy capacity in Europe.
